Xbox One Update / Hot-fix information


An update contains changes that are permanently stored on your system and only needs to be downloaded once. You can download the latest update by launching Battleborn while connected to the PlayStation Network. You will be prompted to install the update if you do not already have the latest version.

A hot fix is automatically applied at the title screen when Battleborn is connected to the internet. In general, hot fixes are used to temporarily address issues between major updates.

Training

Training & New Player Experience

We want to give all new players – especially you who have joined us through the Battleborn Free Trial – a much improved entry in to the Battleborn Versus matches! With so much depth, it takes a few games to get your feet wet and to master the basics you'll need to succeed against experienced players. To help with that, we're changing how new players begin their Battleborn experience.

Versus Prologue

All new players must now play through the Versus Prologue before gaining access to the other multiplayer queues. While this training focuses on "Incursion", it also trains many of the core concepts of Versus Battleborn, including the Helix system, minions, buildables, and which button you push to Return to Base for instant healing! (By the way - it's "B" on PC and "D-Pad Down" on Xbox One and PS4). 

Novice Queues & Command Rank Restrictions

With the update, we want new Battleborn players to have the best chance possible at finding matches closer to their skill level. So, we are introducing "Novice" queues for players below Command Rank 20.

After completing the Versus Prologue, new players will unlock new queues as they gain command ranks. 

  • Command Rank 1-2 (after Versus Prologue)
    • "Novice Versus" - Incursion maps Versus Bots
  • Command Rank 3
    • "Novice Incursion (5v5) - Match against other novice players (below CR 20) 
  • Command Rank 5
    • "Novice Quick Match (5v5)" - Meltdown, Capture, and Face-Off maps matched against other novice players (below CR 20)
  • Command Rank 10
    • "Bots Battle" replaces "Novice Versus" - Play against Bots matched with players of any command rank.
  • Command Rank 20
    • All regular Versus queues.

Novice queues will be unavailable to players above command rank 20, even if they are in groups of players of lower command rank. Players below command rank 20 can join a group with a higher command rank player and be matched into the regular queues; however, novice players cannot match into those queues themselves.

Boosters / Consumables

We made a few quality-of-life changes to Boost UI, adding widgets to the Command Menu AND the front end to let you know which boosts are running and how much longer they will last. 

Also, we've added a new type of Boost available to Trial players called the "Battle Pass" booster. The "Battle Pass" will grant you access to Private Matches, and will temporarily unlock enough characters for Private Matches to allow you to participate in Draft Mode tournaments. In addition to the "Battle Pass" we've also introduced the "VIP Pass." The "VIP Pass" unlocks all characters, mutations, and customizations for your team, grants bonus credits for Victories, and of course unlocks an exclusive temporary title.

  • Active Boosters are now displayed in the Command Menu
  • Added a Battle Pass booster
  • Added a VIP Pass booster 

Founder's Pack

As a "thank you" to all the players who have joined us for the last year of Battleborn, we dub you "Founders"! New Features

Gear Flair:

HATS! HORNS! EARS! Oh, my! We've added a new visual Gear Flair system to Battleborn! Hunt down visual aesthetic customization enhancements to make your favorite Battleborn look SWANK! Flair has a random chance to be added to any gear item. To wear a piece of Flair, activate that Gear item within any match or mission.

Finishers:

Want a way to celebrate each competitive KO with a bang? Finishers let you do just that! Finishers are purchased boosts which will add special FX to a player kill anytime you secure the KO. Pick up a Finisher today and celebrate the sweet taste of victory!

  • Fireworks Finisher: Replaces the player kill beam visual FX with a flashy fireworks display!
  • Something Fishy Finisher: Replaces the player kill beam visual FX with a pile of rotten fish, now with extra-taunt flavor!
  • Dance Off Finisher: Replaces the player kill beam visual FX with sparkling disco ball, as you dance your way to the top!
  • "I Heart" Finisher: Replace the player kill beam visual FX with hearts, smiles, and flowers as you send your love to your defeated foe!

Character Role Specialization:

We want to bring more emphasis to our three character archetypes: Attacker, Defender, and Supporter. While we have always tried to maintain versatility with our Battleborn, we will be taking several steps to create more noticeable differences between the broad categories of characters.

Our first change in this direction is to tweak global attack and defense numbers when fighting non-player enemies, such as bots, sentries, thrall, and any enemy in a Story Mission. Attacker characters will get a general damage boost against non-players, and Defenders will take less damage against non-players allowing them to feel more "tanky".

  • Attackers deal 15% more damage to non-Battleborn enemies
  • Defenders take 15% less damage from non-Battleborn enemies

New Loot Packs

Magnus Pack:

For the serious customization collector, Magnus Packs are now available in the Marketplace for purchase with Platinum! Each Magnus Pack contains the following:

  • 1 Rare or higher gear item, with guaranteed Flair
  • 2 Common or higher gear items, with guaranteed Flair
  • 1 guaranteed Common Skin or Taunt
  • Chance for a Premium Skin or Taunt

General

  • Dramatically reduced the amount of critical hits from NPCs, thralls, and minions. Critical Hits are mostly reserved for Players and Bots now, with few exceptions.
  • Minions are no longer stunned when Silenced
  • Any unused Hero Keys will automatically unlock a locked DLC character or, if all DLC characters are unlocked, be exchanged for 47,500 Credits per unused Hero Key.

Performance

  • Made optimizations to reduce the performance impact of Deande's Holotwinskill activation

Characters

Along with the Character Role specialization changes, we've taken a number of steps to reign in some abilities that provided unintended advantages for particular characters. Chief among these was the amount of Damage Amp available to certain team compositions. While the previous values were appropriate for single target Damage Amp abilities, we concluded that Damage Amp abilities that can easily be applied to multiple targets should be toned down.

  • Reduced the Damage Amplification of AoE abilities from 16% to 8%
  • Characters with physical shields can no longer block while turning in Masks in Face-off

Alani:

Alani is still performing as an extremely powerful character, very strong in both support an attack roles. We are making a few adjustments to bring her back in line with other Support characters, and to take a bit of the edge from her strength as a ranged attacker. While she can still play the hybrid attacker / healer role, our intent is to remove some of the lane dominance from her current play.

  • Reduced base attack damage of Torrent by 10% (from 63 to 57 at level 1)
  • Adjusted Wellspring heal amount when healing with Osmosis stacks (level 1 values below):
    • Zero Osmosis stacks: no change
    • One Osmosis stack: 225 to 180
    • Two Osmosis stacks: 394 to 315
    • Three Osmosis stacks: 674 to 450

Attikus:

While we have been happy with the results from the previous re-work of Attikus, we feel that his Pounce needed a bit more punch to ground him as a melee initiator. We're increasing the size of the damage radius caused by Pounce making it easier to land, but adding damage falloff to that radius so that you are still rewarded for skilled placement of the Pounce. Since he is such a big target for up-front brawling, we're boosting his health a bit. As well, we're giving players more options for lowering skill cooldowns to increase his effectiveness at initiating with a burst. 

  • Increased the AoE of Pounce by 33%
  • Added damage falloff to Pounce
  • Increased base health by 10% (from 2440 to 2678 at level 1)
  • Changed functionality of Level 5 Right Helix Augment Hedronic Haste:

      • Using a Fully Charged skill reduces Attikus' active cooldowns by 30%
  • Reduced the AoE increase granted by Level 8 Left Helix Augment Big Splash from 50% to 33%.
  • Increased Level 10 Mutation Payback Time from up to +60 damage to up to +120 damage
  • Re-named Rank 20 title to "Daddikus". You're welcome, r/Battleborn! 

Beatrix:

Even after some earlier adjustments, Beatrix is still far more lethal than is good for a strong support, especially with access to Silence at low levels. We're reducing her base attack damage, and the damage of Patient Zero and Plague Rat to help mitigate her effectiveness as a damage dealer. We're also decreasing her health a small amount to bring her in line with other Support characters.  

Most importantly, we're changing the way Fulminate works. The Silence duration is now split across each of the Fulminate projectiles as a stacking value. While it is still possible to silence a character for 3 seconds, it now requires you to focus a single player to maximize the duration. Previously, the full value applied to each target hit, meaning you could silence an entire group at range for the full duration. You will still be able to use Fulminate as a group interrupt (from the short-duration Silence), but it is no longer possible to apply such a long Silence to an entire group.

  • Each projectile inFulminate now silences for a portion of the 3 second duration
  • Reduced the base attack damage ofIncistyx Injector by 20% (from 42 to 38 at level 1)
  • Reduced base health by 10% (from 1010 to 915 at level 1)
  • Reduced Patient Zerodamage from 70/s to 35/s at level 1
  • Reduced Level 5 Left Helix Augment Plague Ratdamage from 25 per second to 20

Boldur:

  • The Level 1 Right Helix Augment Crash Helmet will now only grant an overshield after successfully hitting an enemy with Boldurdash

El Dragón:

El Dragón is still lower on both win rate and average kills than we would expect from an attacker. However, in higher-skill play, we still see cases where a well-supported El Dragón can be very effective. We want to create a bit more independence for him, so we're adding stacking damage reduction to his Passive ability. Now, as El Dragón engages in his principal play loop --defeating enemies and gaining stacks of Undisputed Champion-- he will increase in damage dealing and damage reduction. This should give him the edge he needs to survive more of his attack runs as a skirmisher, but requires him to still work for it. As a last note, if you want to maximize survivability, Level 5 Left Helix Augment Heavyweight still grants additional stacking damage bonus IN ADDITION to that gained from Undisputed Champion making him even harder to kill.

  • Each stack of Undisputed Champgrants 2% damage reduction and 2% primary attack damage
  • Level 5 Left Helix AugmentHeavyweight now rewards an additional 1.5% damage reduction per stack down from 3%

Ernest:

Ernest has been gaining a lot of benefit from splash damage on his grenades, requiring less skill than we would prefer to master his potential for damage. We are removing the damage bonus from splash damage of his Direct Hit passive, but increasing the damage dealt to the target. Well-aimed grenades still have the ability to be very effective, but will no longer spread that bonus to every target in a nearby radius.

  • Changed the functionality of Direct Hitand increased the damage dealt from 15% to 30%:
      • Grenades that directly hit an enemy deal 30% additional damage to the target hit
  • Changed the functionality of Level 5 Left Helix Augment Shellshocker:

      • Direct Hit wounds enemies caught in the blast for a brief time. +1 Second Wound Duration
  • Changed the functionality of Level 5 Mutation The Ol' Razzle-Dazzle:

      • Landing a Direct Hit marks the target. Direct Hit deals increased damage to marked enemies, consuming the mark
  • Changed the functionality of Level 5 Right Helix Augment Expedited Explosives:

      • Landing a Direct Hit reduces Explosive Charge's cooldown

Galilea:

Oh, Galilea. The legend of the Wraith of Bliss has continued to cast fear in the hearts of opponents. With this round of changes, our intent is to continue to tune Galilea more strongly into her role as territorial defender, still allowing her to be strong, but restricting where she can wield that strength. With these changes, Galilea players will need to focus more on maintaining Corruption, and will need to be more precise with the timing and use of Desecrate to gain her full advantage.

Corruption is getting an overhaul. The radius is shrinking, and we are doubling the amount of stacks Galilea has to gain to achieve the same bonus. It will take Galilea longer to get to the full benefit of Corruption, and she must be more diligent about staying in active combat to maintain those stacks. 

We're also changing the default benefit from Desecration from Damage Amplication to Slow. Galilea will still be strong within her Desecrate AoE, and will have more ability to use melee to hunt down foes. That should require more skill than the benefit from damage amplification which allowed her to close in and swing wildly close in for big spikes of damage.

Lastly of note, we like the fun of It's Dangerous to Go Alone and the ability for Galilea to finish off ranged targets (especially in Story missions). However, we noticed many Galilea players exploiting this additional attack for more burst damage at close range. So, we're reducing the amount of damage done by this skill at close range to make it less reliable as an augmentation for melee-range damage output.

  • Reduced the AoE of Corruption by 20%
  • Increased Corruption stacks from 20 to 40
  • Melee attacks gain 1 stack of Corruption
  • Skills gain 5 stacks of Corruption
  • DesecrateSlows enemies by default rather than applying Damage Amplification
  • Skill usage is no longer interrupted when pulled by Level 1 Mutation Vortex
  • Level 3 Right Helix Augment It's Dangerous to Go Alone projectiles deal less damage at close range
  • Changed the functionality of Level 4 Mutation Bleak Quiet:

      • While standing in Desecrate, Galilea takes reduced damage. +30% Damage Reduction
  • Changed the functionality of Level 5 Left Helix Augment Last Light to scale Health Regeneration based on Corruption:

      • Health Regeneration now scales up as Corruption grows. Up to +21 Health Regeneration per Second
  • Reduced the reflect chance granted by Level 7 Left Helix Augment Mirror Knightfrom 35% to 25%
  • Changed the conditional on Level 7 Right Helix Augment Duelist:

      • Increases the damage of Galilea's Greatsword attacks while in Desecrate. +18% Damage
  • Changed the functionality of Level 8 Left Helix Augment Inescapable Fate:

      • Enemies standing in Desecrate fields are weakened. -30% Damage Dealt
  • Changed the functionality of Level 8 Right Helix Augment The Black Wind Howls:

      • Enemies standing in Desecrate take additional damage from all sources. +8% Damage Amplification
  • Level 8 Mutation Blight Town increases the AoE ofDesecrate by 25% down from 50%

Kid Ultra:

Kid Ultra has been a powerful support / damage hybrid, but like several other support characters, we find his damage output too high given his other strengths. We're applying a small damage reduction to his primary attack, and also dropping down the damage from the Bola Snare on multiple targets to reduce his effectiveness at multi-target damage.

  • Reduced the base damage of Rocket Gauntlet and Rocket Vortex by 10% (from 54 to 49 per rocket at level 1)
  • Bola Snareprojectiles now deal 33% less damage after hitting the first target
  • Reduced the damage over time granted by Level 1 Left Helix Augment Pain Compliancedamage from 213/2s to 107/2s

Mellka:

  • Adjusted the damage fall-off of Custom Machine Pistolto be consistent with that of similar weapons

Montana:

While Montana does a great job of filling his role as a Defender capable of tanking and pushing waves, his sustained damage output was a bit higher than we'd like to see from a Defender. Increased Heat generation will entice Montana players to be more conscientious of their Heat level and the ways they interact with it. Additionally, Big Payback was capable of being the highest single instance of damage in the game in extreme situations. By soaking up focused fire or Sentry blasts, Montana could one-shot entire teams with Big Payback, so we've put cap on the amount of damage the blast can deal.

  • Level 10 Left Helix Augment Big Payback now deals a maximum of 750 damage to nearby enemies
  • Increased the rate at which Heat is generated by 20%
  • Reduced the accuracy bonus granted by Level 1 Left Helix Augment Weather Manfrom 50% to 40%

Orendi:

Orendi is very close to where we would like most Attackers to be in regards to kills, damage, and wins. With this update, we are taking a small edge off her primary attack.

Pillarstorm is also getting some adjustment. Even though Pillarstorm typically only shows up late game and requires special circumstances for it to be most effective, when the stars align it has been devastating. So, we're reducing the size of the additional Pillars making it far harder to gain the advantage from overlapping damage. We're also dramatically reducing the targeting area of Pillarstorm. Previously, Pillarstorm targeted every Battleborn in a radius around Orendi, making it an automatic hit on any enemy near her. Now, Pillarstorm will only trigger on enemies hit by Paradigm Shift, effectively constraining it to a thick, straight beam.

  • Reduced attack damage of primary and secondary attack Chaos Bolts  by 10% (from 48/23 to 44/21 at level 1)
  • Reduced the size of the Pillars spawned by Level 10 Mutation Pillarstorm by 50%
  • Pillarstorm now only places Shadowfire Pillars under enemies in the area of Paradigm Shift

Gear

As usual, we're making a few changes (Bola's Target Finder, I'm looking at you!) and bug fixes to gear. As well, we've made a few sweeping changes that should alter the gear landscape in what we feel are interesting ways.

Legendary gear items have received a lot of feedback, and have often been hard to balance, especially as they were constrained to a fixed activation cost of 1800 shards. As activation cost is of our primary methods of balancing for gear strength, we found this restriction to be...restrictive.    So, with this update, Legendary gear activation costs now scale with the random level of the gear. That means you will see some lower-powered Legendaries with lower costs, hopefully increasing the effectiveness of some previously overlooked gear items. Also, we now have the ability to adjust cost on a “per legendary” basis, so we'll be using that as a tool going forward to help balance out Legendary Gear.

With that change, all Character Lore Legendary items are now iLvl 100, or "max roll" legendaries. We found that only a handful of character legendaries were being used with any regularity, and would like more of them to feel valuable to players. This is part of the solution to achieving that.

  • Added Operation Specific Commander packs so players have more control over the legendaries they're hunting for
  • Legendary gear activation costs now scale with gear iLvl
  • Characters Legendaries are now max item level
  • Bola's Target Finder: Legendary effect amplifies skill damage only
  • Bola's Target Finder: Legendary effect requires a minimum amount of damage
  • Firmware Update 1.51C: Added a 15 second internal cooldown on the legendary effect

Interface

  • Made Command Rank, Profile Name, Earned Currency, Premium Currency, and Active Boosters visible while on the Main Menu

Game Modes

Incursion:

Simply put, our Incursion sentries have been pretty dumb, often neglecting to protect their assigned areas. So, we've upgraded them. Sentries will now be more vigilant at finding, tracking and damaging enemy targets, they will be less vulnerable to interruption, and they will re-evaluate their targeting priorities more frequently and from further away. 

Along with this change, our big NPCs are getting a scaling health buff to keep them viable as the match progresses. Thralls and Super Minions have always been intended to be "tide turners" in battle, and with this update, they should be more effective in that role.

  • Sentry Improvements
    • Sentries no longer flinch when hit with Skills
    • Increased Sentry targeting distance
    • Sentries more accurately prioritize targets that are in line of sight
    • Sentries are now immune to Weaken, Damage Amp, and Wound
  • Thrall Crusher, Thrall Guard, and Super Minion health and damage increases every 3 minutes

Meltdown:

  • Super Minion health and damage now increases every 2 minutes

 

Scoreboard

Our attempt to improve the tie-breaking mechanic in matches did not yield the results we desired. Our goal was to provide more tangible ways for players to contribute to tie-breakers, especially in Incursion where ties between evenly-matched teams are fairly common. In doing so, we changed which stats appeared on the default screen of the scoreboard to coincide with the tie-breaking stats to help players understand which stats were important to track for securing a win.

After listening to discussion and re-evaluating our design, we determined that our changes weren't achieving our goals. Some stats which were useful to players for gauging the heart of gameplay were hidden. Some stats were being used for tie-breaker evaluation that weren't as important for the game mode. Some stats (like Damage Taken) were debatable about whether high stats or low stats were best. And we found some bugs in how some stats were being evaluated.

While we are sticking with the tie-breaker mechanic for now, we have re-evaluated the used and displayed stats for each game mode and are making changes on which stats are evaluated for tie-breaker victories.

Main Quests & Daily Quests:

While battling to save the Universe is a reward in itself, we've always wanted a way to reward coming back and playing daily in Battleborn. We've heard that request a number of times from players as well, so here it is! Quests!

Main Quests are one-time-completion tasks that help train new players, while offering huge bonus Credit rewards. Daily Quests are forever! Come back every day and complete new daily quests for additional rewards. 

  • Players now receive a Main Quest chain and additional Daily Quests that can be completed for rewards
    • When first logging in, you will receive a Main Quest. Subsequent Quests become available when the previous one has been completed 
    • After completing one match, and then after once per day, you will receive a Daily Quest. No more than 3 Daily Quests can be active at a time, so make sure to complete your Daily Quests promptly!

 

Improved Character Select:

Since before launch, we've wanted to integrate Draft selection mode into competitive play. To do that, we needed to overhaul Character Select to handle different types of character selection depending on which mode you're about to play. With the Winter Update, character select is completely reskinned and cleaned up, and is now more versatile than ever!

  • Players may now choose from up to 5 different character select styles in Versus game modes
    • Captains Draft 5v5
    • Ban Pick 5v5
    • Quick Select
    • Chaos Rumble
    • Classic
  • Character select is now broken into multiple phases, which depend on the character select style
  • Players can now reselect their characters during the selection phase by navigating to the character list and backing out of their selection

 

Training:

One of the most consistent requests we've received from players was for help understanding the unique game modes of Battleborn. We've tackled that in a few distinct ways. The new Versus Training mode uses Nova to walk you through many of the basics of competitive gameplay, including Helixes, bases, buildables, minions, sentries, and one of the most overlooked features - teleporting back to base!

We also heard that players wanted a way to try out characters outside of a match. So, we've created the Dojo! Jump in, starting at level 5 with 100,000 Shards, and practice your skills on waves of minions. Level up quickly and play with combinations of abilities. Tap Nova when you're ready to leave and reset the Dojo.

  • Added a Versus tutorial, featuring concepts from the Incursion game mode
    • Players will initially be able to access a single-player Incursion tutorial to learn the basics of the game mode
    • After completing the tutorial, players will be able to access a training experience that matches 3 players against 3 bots
  • Added a single-player Dojo training map

  • The base 25 characters are now unlocked after completing the Prologue.

The character team wanted to increase viability of close range attacks with Caldarius and focused on improving augmentations to the melee attack. In addition, we modified some of the power growth of Flashbang without reducing any of the core functionality.

We updated Montana's weapon with some quality of life adjustments. We want to allow Montana players to have an easier time hitting thinner characters so we increased accuracy bonuses. In addition, we wanted to give Montana players more options when managing minigun heat.

Thorn

The character team wants to improve the archery fantasy of Thorn so focused on augmentations to promote firing more arrows. We also felt that Thorn lost a lot of damage with the recent Blight changes so we wanted to return some of it via augmentations.

  • Swapped the Helix locations of Level 6 Left Helix Augment Brutal Blight with Level 1 Left Helix Augment Swampfoot

Meltdown:

Meltdown has been a popular game mode, but we felt that it had some issues. It was a bit longer than we wanted it to be, it was hard to get a comeback, and the ending was somewhat anti-climactic.

So, we've updated Meltdown to a new version called Meltdown: Finale! 

While you're still helping MINREC escort minions through recycling grinders to appease his mad-robot-godhood, you now require less score to advance the mode to its new Finale stage! During the Finale, gigantic Ultra Minions spawn and you only need to get one of those Ultra Minions through a recycling gate to win! While the leaders will still have advantages here, there's now more of a chance for a dramatic swing in the late game.

  • Once either team reaches 300 score or 20 minutes have passed, the Meltdown Finale begins! 
    • Ultra Minions begin spawning instead of normal minions for the remainder of the game. The first team to score a single Ultra Minion into the enemy's final grinder wins
    • The team with the greater score after the initial Meltdown phase receives advantages in the Finale based off of the size of their lead, such as stronger Ultra minions and an uncontested first wave of Ultra Minions
    • Ultra Minions become stronger in each successive wave

 

Capture:

Many players have appreciated Capture as a fast brawl-type mode in Battleborn. We felt, though, that Capture was failing to capture what is unique about Battleborn - the strategy of leveling, activating gear, and working with a team to hold points. So, we've re-worked the mode to give players a much faster start, and have re-worked experience awards in the mode to better reward the types of play that we feel make Capture interesting.

  • Players now start at Level 3
  • Players now start with 500 Shards
  • Reduced the amount of time required to capture or neutralize a point from 8 seconds to 6 seconds
  • Increased Experience bonuses for capturing, occupying, and neutralizing capture points
  • Varelsi Scouts no longer drop Helix pickups when killed
  • Varelsi Scouts now drop 150 Shards when killed
  • Varelsi Scouts now provide the entire killing team with significant Experience
  • Varelsi Scouts no longer gain brief invulnerability while turning 
  • Reduced the respawn time of small and medium Shard clusters from 30 seconds to 15 seconds

 

Face-Off:

  • Improved the pathing of Varelsi enemies
  • Players now receive a Nova callout when a team collects 500 masks
  • Snowblind: Reduced the value of Shards near the southern Tier 3 Varelsi camp

 

Story Missions:

  • Players can now acquire Diamond score medals in the 8 original Story missions. Acquiring a new Diamond rating awards a awards a Legendary Gear Pack, up to 4 per mission (Normal, Normal Hardcore, Advanced, and Advanced Hardcore).

The Algorithm

  • Increased the damage Geoff takes from area of effect attacks
  • The health of ISIC's head slowly drains for the duration of the second phase of the Magnus boss fight

The Experiment

  • Reduced the aim assistance when targeting Antem

The Void's Edge

  • Players can no longer become stuck in the Varelsi Void if Deande's Holotwin decoy is alive at the end of the Void phase
  • Players can no longer become stuck in the Varelsi Void by activating a teleport skill during the Void phase transition
  • The number of activation pads required to start the Conservator boss encounter no longer scales up with player count

 

Gear and Economy:

While loot has been fairly generous in Story Missions, we felt (and heard!) that Versus matches were less satisfying in the rewards players earned. So, we're changing several things in order to help Versus play be more equitable to story missions in terms of what you can earn.

We're more than doubling the average amount of credits you earn per hour. We're also consolidating loot packs for sale in the Marketplace into one new loot pack - the Core Pack. The Core Pack is much more expensive than our previous Common Pack, but it now guarantees at least one Rare piece of gear, and has a much better chance of giving higher rarity gear from its three additional slots. The Core Pack has been priced at 2,500 credits, which means you'll be buying these fairly regularly, after a few matches of play.

We like the excitement of opening packs, and wanted to focus that in, while reducing the complexity of trying to understand a marketplace full of packs with subtle differences.

  • Dramatically increased the amount of credits earned per hour when playing Versus matches.
  • Players can now purchase the Core Loot Pack, which has replaced the Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic and Faction Loot Packs in the Marketplace
    • Each pack contain 4 pieces of gear (one of which will be Rare or better), and also has a chance to drop a skin or taunt
    • Packs can be purchased for 2,500 Credits
    • Previously acquired Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Faction Loot Packs will not be modified by this change, and can still be earned through Story Missions, gaining Character Ranks, and completing Operations with 100 Ops points.


Legendary gear is exciting and powerful, but over the last few months, we've discovered a number of ways that gear can be combined with other skills or systems to be more powerful than intended. Sometimes, the best temporary solutions we could offer were to reduce stat numbers to make those gear items almost useless. Conversely, many pieces never lived up to their potential, and as a result did not warrant the activation cost of a Legendary item.

With the Winter Update, we've performed a full audit of our Legendary gear and have made a number of changes and enhancements to attempt to tune each Legendary item to be balanced and useful.

  • Arcship Buoy: Reduced the cooldown time of the Legendary effect from 30 seconds to 15 seconds
  • Blissbeast Skull Plate: Increased the Health Regeneration per Second given by the Legendary effect from a maximum of 14.00 to a maximum of 28.00

New and Reworked Boosts:

  • A new Boosts section has been added to the Marketplace for purchasing and managing Boosts
  • Boosts no longer activate on purchase. You can choose to activate a boost through the Boosts screen in the Marketplace.
  • Double XP Boost now provides stacking bonuses when multiple players in a group have them active at the same time.
  • New Boosts:
    • Loot Booster - Grants gear pack rewards for completing matches and missions. Rewards are increased for Victories, and are greater when stacked with teammates' Loot Boosters.
    • VIP Pass - Unlocks all characters and customizations for your team and grants a credits bonus for victories that stacks with other VIP Pass holders
  • Each boost unlocks a temporary animated title while the boost is active.

 

Interface:

  • The Command Menu has received a visual makeover!
    • The "Objective" statistic has been replaced by a game mode-specific statistic in each Versus mode
    • Added Character Statistics for Best Damage Dealt, Best Healing Given, and Best Damage Taken
    • New layout for the Information page
    • Stats page has received a major update
  • Added a new Gameplay option for Damage Number Styles

  • Broadcasters now see skill targeting indicators in the third-person camera view
  • Broadcasters now see teleport timers when in both first-person and third-person camera views
  • When the killer of a spectated player taunts, the camera will automatically jump to spectate the taunting player.

 

Quality of Life:

  • Reduced the duration of the Victory and Defeat screens
  • Reduced the time required to initiate a vote to surrender if a player has abandoned the match
  • Reduced the time until a player is kicked for idling from 7 minutes to 4.5 minutes

 

FX:

  • Numerous FX adjustments have been made to reduce visual noise and improve performance
  • Improved the buildable cooldown timer bar
  • Added third person FX when a player respawns

 

Audio:

  • Added music to the Victory and Defeat screens
  • Re-activated additional Ultimate skill voice over lines for each character

Surrender System:

  • Surrendering is now allowed earlier than normal to a team if they are outnumbered.

Challenges:

  • Created career challenges for Face-Off games played and matches won.
  • Challenges which previously unlocked characters now unlock special skins for those characters.

 

Scoreboard:

  • All Versus scoreboards now show damage dealt, damage taken, and healing given along with kills, deaths, assists and one stat specific to each game mode
  • Each team winning a particular column of stats is highlighted
  • Versus mode tie-breaking no longer uses player score as this stat has been removed.  
    • Instead, the first tie breaking step is to check which team won the most scoreboard stat categories.  
    • If this is a tie, then the previous tie-breaking steps are used.

Cold Snap:

  • Various changes were made to improve performance on Cold Snap.
    • Reduced the performance impact of the skybox.
    • Removed some dynamic lights.
    • Removed some unnecessary meshes.
  • Moved the two large shard clusters that were near the MX.Elite Bot spawners.
  • Added some geometry at the top of several stairways to match the collision.

Paradise:

  • Changed the cliffs behind the first grinders in Lane A into pathways.
  • Added geometry to prevent players from getting on top of the first grinders in Lane A.
  • Improved the collision on all grinders.
  • Slightly increased the total value of shards available in Paradise to bring more consistency to the Meltdown map economy.
    • Changed four medium ground shards into large ground shards.

 

Capture

Outback:

  • Cleaned up geometry to remove some toe-traps.
  • Added some collision to prevent players from falling off the map immediately outside of the spawn areas.
  • Added some collision to prevent players from entering the terrain between Points A and B.
  • Improved bot pathing.

Temples

  • Various changes were made to improve performance on Temples.
    • Removed some dynamic lights.
    • Optimized certain rendered materials.
  • Cleaned up geometry to remove some toe-traps.

Supply Stations

  • The second upgrade tier of Supply Stations now increases the health regeneration granted instead of providing a small damage boost buff.

 

Campaign Changes

  • Fixed a rare visual issue with the wave count down timer in Defense Point maps.

 

Characters

Alani:

  • Fixed an issue causing Alani’s crosshair to temporarily disappear after rejoining a game.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented Alani’s “Water Monk” title from displaying an icon.

Mellka:

  • Adjusted the audio of Mellka’s Custom Machine Pistol.

Shayne and Aurox:

  • Fixed a visual issue with the chain in Shayne and Aurox’s Fetch

Galilea

  • Fixed and issue that prevented certain Desecrate augment from functioning if Galilea’s level 1 Right Augment Calamity was not active.

 

Performance

  • Added a Particle Detail Mode setting in the Video options, with three available options (PC):
  • Maximum – All Particle Effects are always visible.
  • Normal – Optional Particle Effects are automatically disabled when poor performance is encountered.
  • Minimum – Optional Particle Effects are always disabled.
  • Removed the PhysX setting from the Video options. This feature has been replaced by the new Particle Detail Mode.
  • Improved performance for computers using NVIDIA SLI (PC).
  • Fixed an issue causing poor performance when opening the scoreboard.
  • Fixed an issue causing the tutorial video to use extra resources in all Versus maps.
  • Fixed a rare crash when minimizing the game on the Victory/Defeat screen (PC).

 

Quality of Life

  • Fixed an issue causing challenges to appear to give more experience and currency than they were awarding.
  • Pressing Escape from the Main Menu now exits the game instead of returning players to the title screen (PC).
  • Fixed a rare issue causing the Victory/Defeat screen to appear misaligned (Xbox One).
  • Fixed an issue that allowed players to see the Characters page in the Marketplace without being able to navigate to it.
  • Fixed a small visual issue when refunding Hero Keys.

This week’s hot fixes are mainly focused on community feedback and small tweaks to improve certain FX. It should be noted that, while the Voxis Core Legendary has been temporarily disabled, it will be returning.

  • Reduced Alani's base health from 1451 to 1035.
  • The Voxis Core Legendary gear has been temporarily disabled due to unintended balance implications. 
  • Fixed an issue causing players to burn indefinitely in The Archive.
  • Fixed an issue with snow FX appearing inconsistently in The Algorithm.

Mode & Map Changes: 

We made a few changes to Incursion to prevent teams from snowballing to victory after defeating the first sentry. Now both teams get equal opportunities of lane pushing power at select times during the match. In addition, we added some extra power to the Thralls so that they help expedite team pushes.

Incursion 

  • Empowered Minion Waves no longer spawn for a team after killing the enemy's first Sentry. They now spawn for both teams every fourth minion wave. 

Incursion Thralls

  • All Thralls, when captured, no longer target enemy players
  • All Thralls no longer flinch when hit in the legs by players or minions
  • All Thralls no longer get knocked off the map
  • Thrall Crushers
    • Now only attacks minions directly
    • No longer charges
    • New Skill: Has an area attack that destroys minions instantly and knocks up players (Usable once every 7 seconds)
  • Thrall Guards

Characters:

Ambra

Ambra’s Extinction Event provided unnecessary crowd control due to the large area of effect. We removed the slowing effect to allow for better counter-play options around her ultimate.

  • Ambra’s Extinction Event skill no longer slows enemies.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed Ambra’s Scorching Strikes to deal extra damage.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented stealthed targets from being revealed when Ambra’s level 6 Left Helix Augment, Agile Anomaly and level 2 Right Helix Augment, Solar Burst were active.

 Boldur:

  • Fixed an issue with the description of Boldur’s Legendary gear.

 El Dragon:

  • Fixed an issue that allowed players to move bosses using El Dragon’s level 8 Mutation, Unbelievable.

 Deande:

  • Added a short cooldown to Deande’s Drop Kick to fix unintended vertical maneuverability.

Galilea: 

Galilea’s desecrate was never intended to constantly apply crowd control or debuffs on enemies throughout the duration. We changed the augmentations to only apply the effects at the cast of the skill. This change now requires Galilea players to use Desecrate more effectively and allow some counter-play if players find themselves falling into the Desecrate. In addition, we made some fixes to her melee attack so Galilea is now moving like all other melee when attacking.

  • Galilea’s level 1 Right Helix Augment, Calamitynow only wounds players when Desecrate is initially activated.
  • Galilea’s level 4 Mutation, Bleak Quiet now only silences players when Desecrateis initially activated.
  • Galilea’s level 8 Right Helix Augment, The Black Wind Howls now only increases her movement speed when Desecrateis initially activated.
  • Galilea can no longer attack while sprinting.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented Corruptionfrom damaging enemies affected by Galilea’s Desecrate after selecting her level 1 Right Helix Augment, Calamity.

 Kleese:

  • Fixed an issue that allowed Kleese’s Energy Rifts to replenish Sentry shields in Incursion.
  • Changed Kleese’s HUD to use a jump meter instead of an ammo counter.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed Kleese’s Shock Taser to target stealthed enemies.
  • Fixed an issue with Kleese’s Energy Rift damage when both level 4 Left Helix Augment, Rift Network and level 6 Left Helix Augment, Bulk Savings are active.
  • Fixed an issue that increased the cast range of Kleese’s Energy Rifts and Black Hole.

 Marquis:

  • Fixed an issue with Marquis’s level 2 Mutation, Eyes Everywhere.
  • Fixed an issue where Marquis’s ultimate Bindleblast damage was not tracked properly after taking level 10 Right Helix Augment, exe.

 Miko:

  • Fixed an issue that prevented Miko’s Fungus Among Us from displaying the mushroom’s trajectory when primed.

  • Fixed a rare issue that allowed Shayne and Aurox to gain permanent health regeneration with their level 7 Left Helix Augment, Alone Time
  • Fixed an issue that allowed Shayne and Aurox to use Tag Team through friendly base barriers.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed some projectiles to pass through Aurox.

 Non-Player Characters:

  • Fixed an issue where minions could become very difficult to kill after being affected by certain healing sources.

 Gear:

  • Character Legendary gear no longer uses randomized values.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from acquiring the “Medical Nano-Colony” Legendary gear.
  • Fixed an issue with the “Sentinel Reset Switch” Legendary gear.

 Quality of Life:

  • Added “Faction”, “Character Rank”, “Lore Challenge Completion” and “Unlock” sorting for Battleborn in the Command menu.
  • Fixed a “Player Initialization Failed” error when users first attempt to sign in.
  • Fixed a rare issue that prevented players from controlling their characters if they were modifying their key bindings when starting a boss encounter. (PC)
  • Fixed a rare issue that resulted in black flickering on the main menu. (XB1)

Hot-Fixes

Galilea:

We took a good look at Galilea’s damage and found that she still has the ability to kill players in a short amount of time. We want to promote the health regeneration and zone control loops so we reduced damage some more. The Shield Throw skill was set to a high damage multiplier which we usually award to skills that deal damage only. Since the Shield Throw has a stun, we reduced the damage to match other skills that contain crowd control on top of damage.

  • Reduced Galilea’s Great Sword damage by 18%
  • Reduced Shield Throw damage by 33%

Miko:

Miko's ability to heal others and itself at the same time proved to enable duos of players to dive enemies without much risk. Now, Miko players will have to navigate spaces with more precision and rely on allies to peel off enemies more often instead of being able to just turn and run away.

  • Reduced the movement speed bonus of Miko’s level 7 Left Helix Augment, Fight or Flight, to 15% and its duration to 2s
  • Reduced the healing effect of Biosynthesis by 25%

ISIC:

ISIC's Rotating Wards allowed ISIC to soak lots of damage while dealing lots of damage. The reduction of Rotating Wards’ strength gives enemies a faster window to prevent ISIC from controlling the area. In addition, ISIC players could manipulate their shield regen easily with the first augmentation and some gear pieces so we reduced the augmentation strength. And since ISIC has so many defensive options, we wanted players to be able to quickly whittle ISIC down if they got past his defenses so we reduced his base health.

  • Reduced ISIC’s base health by 20%
  • Reduced Rotating Wards’ block strength by 50%
  • Reduced Watchful Wards’ bonus by 40%

 General:

  • Adjusted skill-based matchmaking ranges to speed up matchmaking times
  • Fixed a minor audio issue on the Meltdown map, Paradise
  • Changed all Faction loot packs to unlock at level 15
  • Reduced the Silver and Gold medal requirements for each medal in the story mission “The Archive” by 20%
  • Doubled the health of stationary defense objectives in story mode
  • Added a turret to the final defensive objective in “The Saboteur
  • Made performance improvements on the multiplayer maps Echelon and Coldsnap

Hot-Fixes

Character Balance:

AMBRA:

Ambra’s damage output combined with her lifesteal and escape abilities resulted in very high survivability in fights. We wanted to bring this in line with our expectation and reinforce her melee loop as part of her damage output.

  • Reduced Staff of Radiance beam damage by 34%
  • Reduced damage of Radiant Wind by 33%
  • Reduced Left Helix Augmentation Cauterization movement speed gain to 30%

 

CALDARIUS:

Caldarius’s primary damage output was not as high as we would have liked to see. We’ve raised it to bring him close in line with other characters in his class.

  • Increased TMP damage by 25%

 GHALT:

After a large buff during Open Beta, Ghalt’s shotgun was now over performing at his normal combat distance, so we have reduced it slightly.

  • Reduced Ghalt’s Revolver Shotgun damage by 13%

 Versus:


To help address late game player dropping, we’ve made the time windows to vote for surrender more generous. We want players to play until the final whistle, but if you’re team is getting steamrolled, we’d prefer an orderly surrender, rather than people bailing early and leaving their teammates hanging. We will continue to look at data and feedback to decide how to handle players who perpetually show bad sportsmanship by dropping from matches.

  • Increased Surrender Time to Vote window from 30 seconds to 60 seconds
  • Decreased Surrender Revote time from 3 minutes to 1 minute

 Story:

Based on Open Beta player data, we’ve made some balance changes to help speed up player progression through the level.

  • Reduced the health of the Galactic Emperor in The Algorithm
  • Increased the XP reward for killing the Galactic Emperor in The Algorithm
  • Reduced the health of all Frigid Golems in The Void’s Edge and The Algorithm
  • Increased the XP reward for killing Frigid Golems in The Void’s Edge and The Algorithm
  • Adjusted score requirements for Star Ratings

 Bug Fixes:

We’ve made various bug fixes and quality of life adjustments to help assist players to beat up Rendain.

  • Fixed a bug with Miko’s heal beam aim assist
  • Fixed some navigational issues when using Kelvin’s Sublimate and traveling over small objects in the world.
  • Fixed some navigational issues when using Caldarius’s Dash and traveling over small objects in the world
  • Fixed a bug that caused players to spawn with invisible weapons and limited functionality.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented players from accessing their gear and loadouts.
  • Fixed several issues with unlocks not being awarded after completing a game.
  • Fixed a bug with Whiskey Foxtrot’s lore challenge awarding the incorrect Legendary gear.

Patch Notes Open Beta 1.0

Character Balance:

AMBRA

Ambra's ability to sustain damage and keep herself alive kept her as one of the top offensive picks. By reducing the damage and survivability, we see Ambra going back into more zone control roles where she has to proactively manage her sun spots. In addition, we found the beam range to put her at a medium to long range allowing her to kite melee enemies so we reduced the range to keep her more in short range category.

  • Reduced melee damage by 15%
  • Reduced Staff of Radiance damage by 4%
  • Reduced passive overshield by 33%
  • Reduced initial range of Staff of Radiance beam by 20%
  • Reduced sustain range of Staff of Radiance beam by 30% 

EL DRAGON

El Dragon's damage output scaled way too high due to the passive and some bugs we found in testing. In addition, his ultimate is meant to be more damage over time so we reduced the instant damage component.

  • Reduced Undisputed Champ bonus damage to melee damage from 3% to 1.5% per stack
  • Reduced Level 5 Mutation Uncanny passive bonus damage to skills from 3% to 1.5% per stack
  • Reduced damage of En Fuego explosion by 62%
  • Reduced Clap damage by 25%
  • Max health has been reduced

GALILEA

We like Galilea’s ability to jump into combat and be a front line tank. However, Galilea’s high attack damage promoted a much more aggressive behavior so we reduced her attack damage and immediate health regeneration. Reducing health regeneration maintains her ability to mitigate lots of incoming damage but now requires more tactical decision making then simply soaking damage and regenerating it all on a button push.

  • Reduced Level 4 Left Helix Augmentation Chaotic Infusion healing per second by 50%
  • Reduced Greatsword damage by 15%
  • Reduced Level 4 Right Helix Augmentation Forsaken Grounds damage by 33%
  • Reduced HP regen granted by Level 5 Left Helix Augmentation Last Light by 50%
  • Removed 100% movement speed from Level 10 Left Helix Augmentation Deeper Than Doubt 

GHALT

Ghalt's promise of a shotgun wielding badass wasn't being fully realized with the low damage per pellet. We wanted to reward Ghalt for closing the range so we increased the shotgun damage. Players should now see the shotgun tear through enemies in close range.

  • Increased Shotgun damage by 50%
  • Increased firing speed of Shotgun by 18%

 KELVIN

A lot of Kelvin's ability to soak damage revolves around the passive shield manipulation. Most of the shield manipulations are multipliers based off of Kelvin's Max Shield Value which was set to a low number. Increasing the Max Shield Value increases the passive and all augmentations that manipulate the shield. With the increased survivability, Kelvin better suits the hit-and-run Defender role.

  • Increased Permafrost passive shield regeneration amount by 80%
  • Increased shield max base

 KLEESE

We believe Kleese's skills provide great area control but his base damage output was vastly underperforming. The increase to the primary attack and the secondary will reinforce some of the ranged damage loops for Kleese players.

  • Increased Wrist Cannon damage by 50%
  • Increased Shock Taser damage by 50%
  • Decreased Level 8 Right Helix Augmentation Brawn Before Brain bonus damage to 25%
  • Reduced Level 3 Mutation Quantum Precision charged Laser damage to compensate for Wrist Cannon damage increase

SHAYNE & AUROX

We reduced attack damage and Fetch damage to tone down Shayne & Aurox's ability to burst down targets while maintaining all the utility attached to Shayne & Aurox's skills. We like where Shayne & Aurox sits between a harassing defender and a potential stealth killer. Removing some of the burst damage innate to our specialized killers helps keep Shayne & Aurox in that mixed role of harasser and killer.

  • Reduced melee damage by 12%
  • Reduced damage of Fetch by 33%
  • Increased Level 4 Left Helix Augmentation What’s Yours Is Mine shield steal from 70% to 100%

 

Game Mode Balance:

INCURSION

We recognize some matches of Incursion stalling around the sentry. We'd like to iterate gradually since many changes can have huge rippling effects. We're going to start with increasing the amount of time before a Sentry is able to begin recharging shields. We're going to increase the time so that teams who control the push can sustain damage onto the Sentry without having to fight the complete shield every time.

  • Increased Sentry Shield Recharge Delay from 8 seconds to 12 seconds

 Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue with Shayne & Aurox’s stun animation
  • Adjusted Phoebe’s jump height
  • Decreased the height of El Dragon’s Dragon Splash
  • Fixed an issue where El Dragón’s Level 5 Right Helix Augmentation Welterweight increased Undisputed Champion bonus damage.
  • Replaced the 'Unsafe' -Health Regeneration per Second flaw on Rogue Gear with the 'Janked' -Healing Received flaw
